Area athletes compete at state track and field meet

Seven athletes from three area schools took to St. Michael-Albertville High School this week for the Minnesota state track and field meet.

Two athletes from Albert Lea, two from United South Central and three from NRHEG all had their chances to capture titles in their respective events.

United South Central senior Brant Blosser was the highest finisher of all area athletes, finishing the 110-meter hurdle finals in fourth place with a time of 14.72, just .19 seconds behind the winner, St. Charles senior Christopher Hilton.

Sophomore Jayden Barnick was the other Rebel to compete at the meet. Barnick finished in 17th place of the high jump with his best effort coming to six feet even. The winner of the event was Minneapolis North junior Diondre Flowers with a jump of six feet, eight inches.

For the Tigers, junior Andrew Tscholl ran in the 1,600-meter run, where he finished in 14th place with a time of 4:29.93. Big Lake senior Jack Leuer won the race with a final time of 4:11.25.

Junior Charlie Irvine represented Albert Lea in the field events, taking 19th place in the long jump with a try of 20 feet, 4.75 inches. Becker senior Carter Reckelberg won the event with a jump of 24 feet, 1.75 inches, more than a foot further than the second-place finisher.

Finally NRHEG had two girls competing in the high jump. Junior Gabby Schlaak finished 11th with a best jump of 5 feet, 2 inches, and sophomore Anika Ladlie came in 21st with a jump of 5 feet even. Park Christian junior Annika Aakre won with a final jump of 5 feet, 7 inches.

Sophomore Kylie Olson finished the shot put in 11th place with an effort of 35 feet, 1 inch. The event was won by La Crescent-Hokah junior Brooklyn Mitchell with a throw of 42 feet, 7.5 inches.
