Stage Left by Heidi Stoltenberg
It’s not easy being Matilda Wormwood. Her self-absorbed mother is horrified that Matilda likes to read, her corrupt deal-making father can’t accept his daughter isn’t a son and her school principal, Miss Trunchbull, sees all children as maggots. But in ACT’s production of “Matilda — The Musical,” the lead character rises above these challenges to lead her fellow students in a rebellion.
Director Gordy Handeland corrals the energy of tweens and teenagers into a high energy show with music that you might find yourself humming the next day. He has two young actresses in the demanding title role, Ella Schlaak and Margot Stanley, so who you sees depends on which performance you attend.
While Matilda may be a show about kids, the adults shine with character and humor from the very top of the show. Matilda’s parents provide comic relief with their campy portrayals of self-absorbed and shallow humans. Kaylynn Rose, who plays Matilda’s mom, Mrs. Wormwood, a wannabe champion salsa dancer, has the comic timing to pull off the character’s big personality. Mr. Wormwood, played by Noah Iverson, tells us where he gained his “moral compass” in the song, “All I Know (I Learned from Telly).”
Misha Stanley excels as the show’s bully, Miss Trunchbull. She has a strong voice and a commanding presence on stage. Michelle Supalla is Trunchbull’s foil as the caring Miss Honey, the teacher who sees Matilda’s gifts. She plays the empathic character with heart and a tender voice.
While Matilda may be considered a show for children, younger children may struggle to follow the storyline.
