Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Trustees, beginning their terms in July. These individuals bring a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to fostering economic development, early childhood development and community vitality across southern Minnesota, according to a release.
Mary Athey, manager of municipal advisory at Baker Tilly, joins the board with extensive experience in economic development. Her previous roles with Community Economic Development Associates (CEDA) and as city administrator in Blue Earth have provided her with first-hand insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by small towns.
She has successfully leveraged SMIF resources to support local initiatives, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable rural economies.
Ann Staloch, a dedicated community leader and president of the Waseca Economic Development Authority, brings a diverse background in nonprofit governance, small business support and youth empowerment. Her deep involvement in civic organizations and her tenure as executive director of the Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce reflect her long-standing commitment to rural revitalization and economic opportunity.
“I’m looking forward to the collaboration that SMIF is known for as we continue to create a stronger, more connected southern Minnesota,” Staloch said.
Greg Schieber, owner and attorney at Nethercut Schieber PA in Harmony, adds legal and small business expertise to the board. Having returned to his southeast Minnesota roots after law school, he has focused his practice on real estate, estate planning, business planning and tax preparation and planning. His active role in the Harmony Economic Development Authority gives him a hands-on perspective on small-town growth and succession planning.
“I am excited to broaden my focus and interest in rural community vitality beyond the Harmony area and into the entire SMIF region through my participation on the board,” Schieber said.
Kim Nelson, MPNA, dean of academic affairs for construction trades, transportation and manufacturing and campus director at Riverland Community College in Albert Lea, brings a strong background in education and nonprofit leadership. With over 17 years of experience as the director of nonprofit child care centers in southern Minnesota,
Nelson understands the vital role of quality early childhood care in regional prosperity. Her work as a school board member and in higher education reflects a dedication to workforce development and community collaboration.
“I am most looking forward to collaborating and partnering with the other board members and communities to continue to support the great work of SMIF,” Nelson said. “I am also excited to give back to an organization that gives the region so much.”
Benya Kraus, SMIF president and CEO, said she is thrilled to welcome the new members.
“Their diverse expertise and passion for the region will help strengthen SMIF’s mission of building a prosperous southern Minnesota through economic growth, early childhood investment, and vibrant communities,” Kraus said.
