- The Albert Lea VFW baseball team defeated Faribault 6-4 at Hayek Field. Alex Goodmanson got the win, allowing one run and three hits over three innings pitched.
- In his ninth major league game, Byron Buxton had three hits while batting lead-off as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox 13-2.
- At the Albert Lea High School boys’ baseball banquet, Chris Enderson was named Most Valuable Player, Kole Smith Batting Champion and Alex Bledsoe Most Improved.
- The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Kentucky star Karl-Anthony Towns with the first overall selection of the NBA draft.
20 years
- The Glenville-Emmons American Legion baseball team picked up their first win of the year with a 13-9 win over Byron. Alex Hansen had one hit, was walked three times and was hit by a pitch in the win.
- The Albert Lea Colonels picked up a 7-6, 10-inning win over St. Charles at Hayek Field. Mitch Meier pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Jeff Schulz to pick up the victory. Phil Wacholz went 3-for-5 and scored two runs in the win.
- Brandon Klukow pitched a complete game allowing only one walk with eight strike outs as the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team defeated Owatonna 2-1.
- The Albert Lea Elks U13 girls’ soccer team saw their record go to 7-1-1 with a 5-1 win over Apple Valley. Maddi Passingham scored two goals with Abbey Arends, Kellsie Dieser and Sophie Miller adding one.
- 50 years
- In Gopher League softball play, home runs by Joe Forman, Gary Reichl and Vern Frydenlund led Ace Transportation to a 31-20 win over Wilson II.
- Steve Falk and Scott Duhrkopf combined to pitch a no-hitter as Post Office defeated Heilman Oil 17-6 in YMCA Little League play.
- The team of Sue Broberg and Wayne Grinnell won the “A” bracket of the Albert Lea Tennis Association’s Mixed Doubles Tournament.
- In the second game of a doubleheader, the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team was defeated by Austin 7-0. Paul Nies had the only hit in the game in the loss.
- Al Skaar drove in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as Hayward defeated Stewartville 3-2 in South Border League baseball action.
- The Albert Lea American Legion “B” baseball team split a doubleheader with Alden. Dan Skogen picked up the win in the first game. With the split, the team stood at 1-2 on the season.
- Sean Passingham placed first in the 440, second in the 220 and fifth in the 100- and 50-yard dashes for the Albert Lea Track and Field Club at a meet held in Rochester.
- In an “A” division meet held in Ames Iowa, Sue Keating placed sixth in the 200-yard individual medley in the 13- and 14-year-old age group for the Albert Lea Swim Club.
- Jim Vangen was holding baseball tryouts for 13- and 14-year-old boys to play with Albert Lea’s entry in the Stars of Tomorrow baseball tournament being held in LaCrosse.
- The Albert Lea Town Team committed 14 errors as they fell 10-1 and 14 -4 to Rochester in a South Border League baseball doubleheader. Bob Marquardt took the loss in game one with Larry Buck taking the loss in the nightcap.
- Ken Holtzman pitched a seven-hitter to record his seventh straight win as the Oakland A’s defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-1 in front of 4723 fans in Oakland in a game played in one hour, 53 minutes.
