Award winners were announced for the 2004 LeRoy Maas Wrestling Scholarships at the recent Albert Lea High School awards assembly.

The first award of $3,000 was given to Adam Elseth, who won an individual state wrestling championship this year while helping the ALHS team to third place in the state tournament. He is the all-time ALHS leader with 160 career victories.

An honor student, Elseth plans to attend the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.

The second award has an unusual twist. A scholarship of $1,000 was given to Josh Wilke, who was out for wrestling all four years but never made the varsity. Wilke was known as one of the hardest workers on the team and is also an honor student.

Wilke plans to attend Riverland Community College and take a course to qualify himself for a job in construction electricity. His goal is to use the income from working as an electrician to further his education and receive a four-year degree in accounting.

The fund has awarded 17 scholarships totaling $20,800.
