Freeborn County Relay for Life packed with events on Fri.

The biggest event this weekend is the Freeborn County Relay for Life. The event starts at 6 p.m. Friday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. A survivor lap is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and luminaries will be lit at dusk.

Entertainment at the fairgrounds will include Flashback from 7 to 9 p.m., Jennifer Ordalen from 9:45 to 10:15 p.m., 3 Wheels and a Flat from 10:15 to 11:15 p.m. and Merle Krause from 11:15 p.m. to 6 a.m.

A silent auction will be held as well. Food vendors include Jake’s Pizza, Bruno’s, Blondie’s Baskets and Casa Zamora. Closing ceremonies will be at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

Theme laps for the relay are: 1 a.m. Hawaiian theme, 2 a.m. Halloween costumes, 3 a.m. favorite sports team and 4 a.m. purple power/relay spirit.

Other events include the farmers market on Saturday and shows at the Art Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A fire department fundraiser will be held at Green Lea Golf Course on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. Also throughout the weekend there will be cruises on the Pelican Breeze II.

Friday

  • The eighth annual Freeborn County Relay for Life event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. The survivors lap is at 6:15 p.m. Lighting of luminaries starts at dusk. Closing ceremonies will be at 6 a.m. The relay benefits the American Cancer Society.
  • The “Art in Fashion” shows at the Albert Lea Art Center will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shows feature the work of Stacia Lang and Julia Olson.
  • A Pelican Breeze II pizza cruise will go from 6 to 7:30 p.m., departing from the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Call 383-2630 by 4 p.m. Friday for reservations. Pizza cruises are $20 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 and under.
  • Old car cruise on South Broadway Avenue from 6 to 8 p.m. Meet at the former Red Owl building. No entry fees, awards or registration, just good old fun cruising Broadway.

Saturday

  • The Albert Lea Farmers Market will be in the North Broadway Avenue parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team is hosting a car wash at Hy-Vee in the back parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
  • The “Art in Fashion” shows at the Albert Lea Art Center will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shows feature the work of Stacia Lang and Julia Olson.
  • A Pelican Breeze II public cruise will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Pelican Breeze boat landing. Cost is $15 per person, and $5 for ages 5 and under.
  • A Pelican Breeze II pirate and princess cruise will be held. Call 507-383-2630 for time and reservations. Cost is $12 per person, and $8 for ages 5 and under. Cruises are one hour and include pizza.

Sunday

  • The “Art in Fashion” shows at the Albert Lea Art Center will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shows feature the work of Stacia Lang and Julia Olson.
  • A golf fundraiser for the combat squad of the Albert Lea Fire Department will be held at Green Lea Golf Course in Albert Lea starting at 1 p.m.
  • The Good Time Band will play at Northbridge Mall in Albert Lea from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
  • A Pelican Breeze II public cruise with Al Batt is scheduled. Call 383-2630 for more information. Cost is $15 for adults and $5 ages 5 and under.
