UP — To voter turnout in the primary election.

It was unexpected to see voter turnout in Minnesota at the highest it has been for a primary in a decade. After all, the primary had been moved from September to August, smack-dab into the dog days of summer. The governor’s race, however, drew the voters to the polls. And in many counties, such as here in Freeborn County, a local race or two also had some pull. The county sheriff and Albert Lea mayor races had the interest of the people. That’s a good sign for healthy democracy.

UP — To the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

No rain fell Friday night, but it was nonetheless enjoyable to experience Freeborn County’s Relay for Life using the alternate location of the animal barns. Plus, many attendees at the event were arrested. Which is a good thing, because the bail money given to Cops Kicking Cancer to get them out of jail raised even more money for cancer research. All in all, a good time was had. Kudos in particular to the people who made it through the night out there at the fairgrounds.

DOWN — To being connected all of the time.

Give us a break! Some people can’t get their noses out of their handheld devices for two seconds to experience life in the real world. These days, it’s not uncommon to see couples out to dinner and instead of talking they are both texting and consuming social media such as Facebook or watching the latest antics of Lady Gaga or Lindsey Lohan. People need to have a little face time with reality. Get to know loved ones a little.
