Editorial: Bonding bills good for the economy

Amid all the issues facing legislators is the always-interesting bonding bill.

This legislative session could go either way: yet another year of gridlock and fighting because no one wanted to compromise or a year to remember where the elected officials accomplished what to many voters seemed impossible.

In a time when the state faces a mountainous budget deficit and a slumping economy, the bonding bill is a source of hope. It can provide jobs and get some much-needed projects going.

Newspapers across the state, including this one, will argue for their local projects. Of course, ours are as important as the next ones.

This editorial, however, isn’t about that.

This editorial aims to encourage the Republicans and Democrats in St. Paul to pass a bonding bill without line-item vetoing much of it. The people want to see work done, not posturing for political aspirations. Compromises and signatures this year will look better than more scornful anger.

Bring back projects in the bonding bill to the people of Minnesota this year.
