FREEBORN — Despite a late golf season, thanks to the chilly and rainy weather that’s plagued Southern Minnesota this spring, Oak View Golf Club is having a lot of success with its Family Days.

Each Saturday and Sunday, kids are allowed to play for free with a paid adult.

“There are definitely a lot of kids coming out,” said course manager Matt Hallman. “The earlier they get started, the more they can develop a love for the game. We’re making it more affordable to get the kids out here, and we know they’ll enjoy it.”

And now that summer’s nearly here, there’s even more to look forward to at Oak View, a 40-acre course full service course with nine holes. The Gabby Pierce Memorial Tournament slated for June 13 is already booked solid.

Harold “Gabby” Pierce grew up in Freeborn and was a long-time coach at Waldorf College. Hallman said the tournament, which is coordinated by Pierce’s son, Jeff, raises funds scholarships for students involved in Waldorf College athletics.

“He was just a great guy in the community,” said Hallman.

The leagues are also in full swing, with 14 teams of 10 players on men’s league, which plays on Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesday is the ladies league, with five teams of four women each on the roster, so far.

“We don’t shut the course down for league,” Hallman pointed out. “People just have to realize it might be busier on those nights.”

Also popular at Oak View is the Thursday evening golf special, which includes nine holes of golf with a cart and a steak dinner. Couples’ specials are on Fridays, and include nine holes of golf with a cart and a meal that includes a split steak dinner or burger with two sides.

Oak View Golf Club is a full service golf course located along County Road 8 near Freeborn. It is incorporated as Freeborn Lake Recreation Association and is operated by the board of directors.
