50 years ago — 1962

The Albert Lea basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the Big Nine Conference with a 79-57 win over Austin. The Tigers were led by Lowell Syverson with 25 points and Clair Flaten and John Goodmanson with 20 each.

The Albert Lea wrestling team won the District 2 title. Moving on to region were Ken Stauch at 95 pounds, Mike Callahan (103), Pete Fabry (112), Paul Hanson (120), Rog Kittelson (127), Bruce Palmer (145), Dan Jahns (154), Byron Boer (165) and Jeff Brooke at heavyweight.

Don Brummer scored 25 points and Jerry Jahnke had 16 rebounds for Alden in their 64-58 win over Bricelyn. Tom Lund led Bricelyn with 24 points.

25 years ago — 1987

Winning the Gopher Conference title with a 12-2 record was the Ellendale-Geneva girls’ basketball team after a 56-48 victory over Waterville-Elysian. Tina Wangsness scored 22 points and had 22 rebounds for E-G.

The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team raised their Big Nine Conference record to 8-4 with a 6-1 win over Faribault. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Steve Nelson with a hat trick, Brian Knudsen, Steve Stoltz and David Nystrom.

Results in the Albert Lea Women’s Bowling Tournament included the following: Class A team: The Originals, including members Julie Schrieber, Linda Godtland, Jay Godtland and Carol Peterson. Class B team: Servicemaster, including members Marcia Stoneking, Theresa Brua, Sandy Wildeman and Julie Stoneking. Singles: Actual all-events, Linda Godtland; handicap all-events, tie with Linda Godtland and Nancy Johnson; doubles, Vivian Freeman and Mary Swenson.

10 years ago — 2002

Albert Lea graduate Desiree Budd, a senior at St. Scholastica College, placed second in the NAIA National Cross-Country Meet and earned All-American honors.

Sophomore Adam Elseth at 135 pounds and junior Josh Hansen (105) from Albert Lea were Section 1AAA champions and qualified for the state wrestling tournament.

In a first round hockey game in Section 1A, Albert Lea defeated Mankato West 4-2. Scoring goals for the Tigers were Travis Miller, Egan Mattson, Jamie Erickson and Adam Boelter.
