Body found in western Albert Lea

A body was found in a wooded area in Albert Lea’s Garden Villa subdivision Saturday afternoon, according to Albert Lea police.

The cause of death is unknown.

Police stated the body was discovered after dispatchers received a call at about 3:40 p.m. from a resident on the 100 block of Will-O-Bruce Drive. The person reportedly smelled an odor coming from the wooded area behind the residence and upon further investigation found the corpse.

No information has been released about the identity of the person. It is also unclear how long the body had been there.

According to a news release, the body was taken to the Dakota County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is standard procedure under unknown circumstances.

More information is expected to be released pending the results of the medical examiner’s office.

Albert Lea Police Lt. Jeff Strom said with the holiday today, the autopsy may not be conducted until Tuesday or Wednesday. More information should be available later this week.

The Garden Villa subdivision is west of Graceland Cemetery, across West Main Street from the Albert Lea Family Y.

To the north of the neighborhood is the Dakota Minnesota & Eastern rail line.
