Freeborn County Relay for Life officials announced last week that community members raised more than $193,000 in the 2012 local relay.

The donations surpassed the 2012 goal of $164,000 and proved to be the most successful relay in the history of Freeborn County.

“We’re very pleased to have surpassed our fundraising goal for 2012 by such a substantial amount,” said Sadie Wuerflein with the committee. “It’s heartwarming to see such an amazing example of generosity and caring in our community.”

The relay, the local signature event for the American Cancer Society, has been in Freeborn County for 10 years. Money raised goes toward cancer research, raising awareness of cancer prevention and cancer treatment.

This year’s relay was Aug. 10 and 11; however, funds are collected from Sept. 1, 2011, through Aug. 30 of this year.

In 2011, community members raised about $175,000.

Wuerflein said there were 4,500 luminarias created this year in honor of loved ones who have been affected by cancer.

She reminded people impacted by cancer that there are many resources available to them through the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Research Network. There are tools to help with treatment, day-to-day help finding transportation and lodging, and support groups.
