A 22-year-old Albert Lea man is facing three years in prison after he allegedly violated his probation as a convicted sex offender.

Armando Mendez Jr., sentenced in July for molesting a 7-year-old girl, allegedly violated five conditions of his probation, said Assistant Freeborn County Attorney David Walker.

Walker said Mendez is alleged to have violated his probation by going into a bar, failing to disclose his criminal history of sexual contact with a significant other, failing to be of good behavior during his probation and not being cooperative with his probation agent. He also reportedly was terminated from sex offender treatment after having unpermitted, though not illegal, sexual contact with a resident where he was living.

Mendez was ordered in July to 10 years of probation, with the understanding that if he violated his probation he could face prison time.

Additional conditions of probation included not possessing or using a computer, cellphone or gaming system that has access to the Internet.

He was also ordered to have no contact with minors under 18 unless otherwise approved and was to remain at least five blocks away from any school, park or campground and register as a predatory offender.

Walker said Minnesota Department of Corrections probation agent Ashley Schultz testified at a violation hearing on Tuesday, and additional witnesses will testify at a second hearing at a later date.
