FELTON — Authorities said a suspect fled from a vehicle following a police chase in Clay County and was found dead the next day, apparently of hypothermia.

A sheriff’s deputy was patrolling state Highway 9 about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and turned his squad around to check on a passing car. The driver took off, turned onto a county road and came to a stop at a dead end. The deputy found one person in the car and two sets of tracks in the snow.

Deputies followed the tracks, but eventually ended their search. That night, the owner of the car called authorities to say one of the two people who had left the vehicle could not be found. The search began again Sunday and the man’s body was found about 4 p.m.
