A high-risk predatory offender who had been slated to move to Albert Lea over the weekend has instead moved to Austin, according to the Albert Lea Police Department.

Robert Carl Goodew

Robert Carl Goodew, 21, a Level 3 offender, registered his address in Austin on Saturday when he was released from prison, said Frank Kohl, an Albert Lea detective.

A community meeting scheduled for tonight at St. Theodore Catholic Church to discuss Goodew’s release has been canceled.

As late as last Thursday, Goodew had told prison officials he planned to move to Albert Lea; however, his address was listed as “homeless.” Before that, he had been scheduled to be released to an address about three miles west of Hollandale.

Why he opted not to move to Albert Lea is unclear. However, before his latest stint in prison, he had resided in Austin.

Albert Lea Police Chief Dwaine Winkels said though Goodew will not be living in Freeborn County, people should still be aware of who he is because he has family in the county.

According to his notification sheet, Goodew engaged in sexual conduct and contact with a 12-year-old boy.

He was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct in Freeborn County in 2009 for showing explicit videos to the boy and physically forced him into “fondling.” He was eventually convicted of third-degree assault and was initially placed on five years of supervised probation and ordered to register as a predatory offender. He was sentenced to prison time after he failed to register.

He is classified as a Level 3 offender, which means he has the highest likelihood of reoffending.

Kohl said with Goodew deciding not to move to town, Tai Lars Stadheim is the only Level 3 offender living in the city.

Stadheim, 43, has been living in Albert lea since he was released from prison in April 2010. He has a history of sexual contact with juvenile female victims, including fondling. He was known to his victims.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections states his registered address is on the 2100 block of East Main Street.
