New lecture at Art Center

The next lecture in the Dorothy Godtland Lecture series will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Albert Lea Art Center. This month’s lecture features Jill Holmes, a business instructor at Riverland Community College, who will demonstrate how to cane a chair.

As a child, Jill’s interest in caning was sparked as she watched her mother replace the cane in chairs in their dining room. When Jill acquired two antique chairs from her great aunt, she decided it was time to learn how to cane so she could repair the chairs herself.

Caning has become a lost art as most furniture today is machine manufactured and the hand crafted techniques are not being passed along. Jill hopes to inspire others to attempt this skilled craft to restore antiques or family heirlooms of their own.
