50 years ago: 1964

• Al Lerum of Minneapolis won the first annual Albert Lea Country Club International Golf Tournament with a score of 218 for 54 holes. Ells Bennett of Livermore, Iowa, came in second with a score of 222.

• The Trades and Labor softball team won its first game at the Minnesota State Fastpitch Tournament 1-0 over Roseville behind the shutout pitching of Ken Heine. Trades and Labor was eliminated in the second round by Duluth by a score of 16-2.

• Tom Greenwood scored a touchdown and the extra point for New Richland High School in its season opening football win over Le Center 7-0.

• Albert Lea lost its opening football game to Red Wing 25-6. Dave Mueller scored for the Tigers.

• Glenville opened its football season with a 12-0 victory against Emmons. Danny Rodgers scored both touchdowns for Glenville.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• The Albert Lea football team defeated Mason City 34-0 with Chad Bohonek gaining 188 yards on 13 carries and scoring on an 86-yard run. Bohonek and Shane Arett each scored two touchdowns, and Chad Ayers added one more.

• Leah Mattson won both the 200-meter freestyle and the 100 freestyle for the Albert Lea girls’  swimming team in its 93-76 win against Winona.

• The Alden-Conger-Freeborn volleyball team defeated Blooming Prairie 3-0 by scores of 15-12, 15-6 and 15-0. Leading the Knights were Darcy Evenson, 13 kills; Jenny Stenzel, 25-of-26 serving; Kim McKean, 11-of-12 serving; and Chrissie Bottcher, 9-of-9 serving.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• Mick Hockinson won the 2004 Shortstop Tournament at the Albert Lea Country Club, three up over Chris Baas, who had won the last three Shortstop Tournaments in a row.

• The Albert Lea girls’ swimming team defeated Owatonna 97-85. Double winners for Albert Lea were Whitney Walters in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Leah Mattson in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Also winning for Albert Lea were Jackie Elwood in the 100 butterfly, Rachael Hagen in the 500 freestyle and Kaeli Wayne in the 100 backstroke.
