SHOREVIEW — Hennepin County sheriff’s officials said two people have been fatally shot in separate incidents that prompted the closure of Interstate 694 in the Shoreview area north of St. Paul.

The officials said the first shooting took place at the Elm Creek rest stop on Interstate 94 in Maple Grove about 1 a.m. today.

Officers later spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle. They pursued that vehicle until it crashed on I-694, about 20 miles east of the rest stop. Authorities said the suspect got out and brandished a weapon. Officers opened fire, and the man was killed.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said I-694 was expected to remain closed between Interstate 35W and Interstate 35E until around 7:30 a.m.
