St. Cloud on verge of losing Chicago air service

ST. CLOUD — A high-level effort to preserve a commercial air link between St. Cloud and Chicago appears to be coming up short.

St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said that SkyWest Airlines is set to suspend its twice-daily flights in April. The flights are between St. Cloud Regional Airport and Chicago O’Hare International.

Kleis and Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton had a conference call with airline officials to consider options. The route has been heavily subsidized since starting up in May to make up for light passenger loads.

Kleis said airline officials told him and Dayton they would consider resuming service at a later date if a “sustainable solution” is found to help finance it.
