ST. PAUL  — Como Zoo in St. Paul has a new baby western lowland gorilla.

The female gorilla was born at about five pounds in the evening of Feb. 22 to first-time mother Dara.

Zoo officials said while bonding wasn’t an issue for the pair, officials did need to go in and give the baby fluids because nursing was a problem.

Soon after the pair reunited, the baby started nursing regularly but staff continues to monitor them.

The new baby is named Arlene after the late Arlene Scheunemann, a volunteer who helped establish the docent program and was a board member of the zoo’s nonprofit.

The two gorillas will likely make their public debut later this month.
