50 years ago: 1965

Northside Mobil defeated Wilson 28-16 in the Albert Lea Women’s Softball League. Diane Schroeder pitched the win and Athlene Tesch led the offense with two home runs and three singles.

In the Albert Lea Slowpitch League Schmidts-Elbow Room defeated the Eagles 7-5, with Lanny Bachtle picking up the win and Delano Hovey having four hits. Clarks Grove was victorious with a 10-8 win over Almco. Rog Jacobson had four hits in five at bats for Clarks Grove.

Alden defeated Hayward 7-4 in a 5-Star American Legion League baseball game. Al Lindeman was the winning pitcher.

In the Albert Lea Softball League the VFW defeated Smith-Douglass 6-4. Ron Meyer was the winning pitcher and Bruce Nelson had three hits for the VFW.

 

25 years ago: 1990

The Albert Lea VFW baseball team raised their season record to 9-7 and their league mark to 4-5. Brian Carlson homered and Aric Knutson doubled and tripled for Albert Lea. Eric Brown was the winning pitcher.

Scott Johnson had three hits to lead the Albert Lea American Legion baseball team to a 15-3 win over New Richland.

Rick Aguilera picked up his 20th save and Kirby Puckett had three hits for the Minnesota Twins in their 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox.

 

10 years ago: 2005

The Albert Lea Elks U-17 boys soccer team improved to 6-2-1 for the season after defeating Dakota County 4-1. Scoring goals for Albert Lea were Zack McGinnis and Jesse Tovar with two goals each.

Andrea Schultz of United South Central was named the Albert Lea Tribune Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Schultz’s coach, Brad Huse, was named the Albert Lea Tribune Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. Named to the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Softball Team were Jeri Mondeel from Albert Lea High School; Steph Lackey and Kendra Mathiason from Alden-Conger; Jordan Claussen, Mallory Paulsen and Lindsey Lorenzen from Glenville-Emmons; Gina Quiram, Emily Hagen, Kayla Reed and Laura Hager from NRHEG; and Coryn Stevermer, Nicole Wigern, Sam Ehlert and Andrea Schultz from United South Central.
