Weekend Planner: Northbridge Mall to come alive with history this weekend

Take a step back into time this weekend at the 23rd annual Big Island Rendezvous Historical Faire at Northbridge Mall.

Free to the public, the event includes presentations and workshops about spinning and natural dyes, the New Ulm Battery, a shoe maker, a pioneer jail, fabric printing and gold panning, among others.

More than 40 tables of items will be for sale, showcasing pottery, woodworking, ironwork, art, jewelry and colonial crafts.

The Big Island Rendezvous Historical Faire goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The following is a roundup of other events happening this weekend:

 

Friday

• The Freeborn County Arts Initiative’s “Going Places” exhibit will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 224 S. Broadway.

• St. Theodore Catholic School will host a fish fry from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Theodore’s Marian Hall. Menu includes fish, shrimp, baked or mashed potatoes, cole slaw, rolls, beverage and a build-your-own sundae bar. Cost is $10 for adults, $6 for children 5 to 10 and free for children 4 and under. Take-out orders are available.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “Don’t Hug Me I’m Pregnant” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Cost is $18 for adults and $10 for students.

 

Saturday

• A lecture series titled “Church Altars of Freeborn County” will be at 9 a.m. at the Freeborn County Historical Museum, 1031 Bridge Ave.

• The artist reception for the Freeborn County Arts Initiative’s “Going Places” exhibit will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at 224 S. Broadway.

• Albert Lea Daybreaker’s Kiwanis will host a scholarship fundraiser fish fry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion, 142 N. Broadway. Cost is $10 for adults, $6 for children 10 and under. A complimentary rose will be given out for the first 50 ladies.

• “Love is in the Air,” a collaboration between the Albert Lea Art Center, the Interchange Wine & Coffee Bistro and Albert Lea’s Historic Preservation Commission will begin at 5 p.m. at the Freeborn National Bank building and the Interchange on Broadway.

The event includes the Art Center’s “Art with Heart” exhibit, free food and entertainment.

Alden American Legion Post 404 will host a steak fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Menu includes a 10-ounce ribeye, baked potato, cole slaw and garlic toast. Cost is $13.

Sunday

Albert Lea American Legion Post 56 will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes and scrambled eggs with or without diced ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.50.
