50 years ago: 1966

The Windjammers team won the Albert Lea women’s volleyball title over the Tigers by scores of 15-4, 15-10 and 15-13. Members of the winning team were Margie Schock, Nancy Anderson, Alice Peterson, Dee Dunn, Norma Robson, Neva Lembke, Jonalyne Escen, Cheryl Wolff and Karen Williamson.

Green Lea won its second straight men’s Albert Lea City Volleyball title. Team members were Al Brooks, Delano Hovey, Jack Greengo, Dave Long, Paul Wilke, Arvid Stiles and Bill Malepsy.

Named to the Border League All-Conference basketball team were the following: from Elmore, Larry Mair, Terry Severson and Lee Norman; Emmons, John Lair and Steve Hendrickson; Frost, Ron Thompson and Jeff Loge; Kiester, Burdette Courrier; Freeborn, John Miller; Delavan, Jerry Treptow; Bricelyn, Glen Oelerking; and from Alden, Alan Lindeman.

 

25 years ago: 1991

Maynard Midtgaard was named to the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He coached for 32 years and had a career record of 420-251. At N-K, his team won 10 conference titles and won 84 straight conference games in a row from 1983 through 1986.

Named to the Gopher Conference All-Conference Basketball Team were Kirk Petersen and Aaron Phillips from Alden-Conger-Freeborn; Darian Baker from NRHEG; and David Severson from Blooming Prairie.

Lou-Rich won the Albert Lea Men’s B League basketball playoffs for the second year in a row. Team members were Blane Hammer, Paul Olson, John Christianson, Scott Woitas, Steve Enderson, Steve Munson and Randy Tomschin.

 

10 years ago: 2006

Named the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Player of the Year was Parker Skophammer of Albert Lea High School. Named to the All-Area First Team were Skophammer and A. J. Kortz from ALHS; Dan Bestul and Cody Hanson from Northwood-Kensett; and Jarrad Knutson from Glenville-Emmons.

N-K won the consolation title in Class 1A at the Iowa state basketball tournament after defeating Waco Wayland 68-48. The Vikings were led in scoring by Cody Hanson with 19 points, Dan Bestul with 17 and Preston Davidson with 14.
