Winter weather on its way to A.L.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for local communities, including Albert Lea, for Wednesday.

A strong winter storm is forecast to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow, with some locations possibly seeing more, especially along Interstate 90..

Precipitation is expected to begin as rain early Wednesday before transitioning to moderate to heavy snowfall by mid morning.

The snow is expected to last through much of Wednesday night with wind gusts expected to exceed 30 mph.

Significant impacts to travel are likely, especially along the Interstate 90 corridor and along Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota.

A winter storm warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. The National Weather Service advised travel only in an emergency.

The watch is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 9 a.m. Thursday.

The winter storm watch is also in effect for local communities, such as Rochester and Austin.
