AAUW meeting scheduled

The next American Association of University Women will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at America’s Best Value Inn. The meal will be a small chef salad with a breadstick and coffee for $11.

The guest speaker will be Jean McDermott, principal of I.J. Holton Intermediate School in Austin. The title of her presentation is Voices of Transformation: Changing School and Collaborating to Build STEAM Education.

A native of Austin, McDermott received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Bemidji State University. She received her middle school endorsement from St. Thomas University in St. Paul. McDermott taught middle school math in Roseville for 11 years and middle school math, science and health in Austin for nine years. She completed her master’s degree in education at Hamline University in St. Paul with a capstone project on service learning. She earned her K-12 principal licensure from Winona State University.

McDermott has served as principal at Ellis Middle School, Neveln Elementary, Woodson Kindergarten Center and now the newly- opened I.J. Holton Intermediate School all in Austin, during the past 17 years. She has provided leadership in a number of school initiatives including the re-organization and opening of a district all-day kindergarten center, Reading First, and the construction and programming of STEAM Intermediate School, which opened for students in September 2013.
