Tigers finished 1st in Big Nine track meet

50 years ago: 1966

At the Big Nine Conference invitational indoor track meet, Albert Lea High School finished in first place. First-place finishers for the Tigers were Terry Peterson in the high jump and Darrel Gavle in the shot put.

At the start of baseball practice, ALHS coach Bill Christopherson greeted four returning letter winners. They were Dick Wayne, Rick Swanson (SS), Jim Cornick (1B) and Louis Gueltzow (OF).

 

25 years ago: 1991

The ALHS baseball team opened its season with a 6-1 victory over Waseca. Winning pitcher Steve Brigger and Chad Hinz each had two hits for the Tigers and Tom Keating hit a two-run home run.

Omar Hamer of rural Clarks Grove won the 1991 Minnesota State and Section Small Bore Championship.

Wayne Olson, coach of the Glenville-Emmons High School girls’ softball team, started practice with six returning letter winners. They were Colleen Kral, Dacia Haraldson, Kelly Peterson, Stacia Schroeder, Heather Hillman and Darcy Estrich.

In its opening meet of the year, the ALHS boys’ track team scored 66 points to defeat Decorah with 54 points and Winona with 52.   Winners for the Tigers were Chad Bohonek in the 100 meters, Nate Jensen in the high jump and Darin LeRudin the 110 high hurdles.

Returning letter winners for the NRHEG High School baseball team were Kevin Larson, Neil Bentley, Brett Richards, Jason Tracy, Erik Smith and Greg Schulz.

 

10 years ago: 2006

With Justin Flattum, Michael Greibrok, Wade Flattum and Seth Buchanan each having two hits, the G-E baseball team defeated Alden-Conger 11-3 in its first game of the year.

The ALHS baseball team opened its season with a 9-8 win over Faribault. Matt Schumann had three hits and Arik Matson homered for the Tigers. Taylor Ignaszewske picked up the win in releif.

The NRHEG girls’ golf team defeated Maple River 242-270. Katie Walstrom shot 58, Marian Tappe 60, Hannah Demmer 61 and Page Sorenson 63 for the Panthers.
