Sports Memories by Chuck Anderson

50 years ago: 1966

In the first round of the 1966 Minnesota state high school basketball tournament, Blooming Prairie was defeated by Henning 82-69. BP was led in scoring by Jim Turner with 13 points, and Bob Tonolli and Dan Harms with 12 points each. BP was eliminated in its second game after losing to Windom. Steve Fritz scored 19 points for BP.

Mary Kron of Albert Lea led the Minnesota Women’s Bowling Association state bowling tournament with one more week of competition remaining.

Albert Lea High School head baseball coach greeted four returning letter winners for the 1966 season. They were Dick Wayne, right-handed pitcher; Rick Swanson, shortstop; Jim Cornick, first base; and Louis Gueltzow, outfield.

Bob Oothoudt, Tony Hanson, Steve Gordon, Floyd Harves and Don Nolander were all senior letter winners for the ALHS golf team as practice started for the 1966 season.

 

25 years ago: 1991

Named to the Big Nine Conference All-Conference girls’ basketball team from ALHS were Pam Stoltz and Lori Coughlin. Receiving Honorable Mention were Carla Zevenbergen and Lisa Frame.

Named to the Minnesota Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame was Mabel Miller of Albert Lea.

Returning letter winners for the Alden-Conger-Freeborn baseball team were Aaron Phillips, Matt Korman, Rich Honstad, Kory Newman and Chris Sorenson. Neil Pierce was the head coach.

Sam Nelson, head coach of both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams at ACF, greeted returning letter winners Kirk Petersen, Joe Nelson, Mitch Johnson and Chris Miller for the boys’ team and Diane Chicos, Robin Klocek, Susie Schuster and Kim McKean for the girls’ team.

 

10 years ago: 2006

Named the Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Basketball Coach of the Year was Mindy Sparby of NRHEG. The Albert Lea Tribune All-Area Basketball Player of the Year was Alison Anderson of NRHEG. Named to the All-Area First Team were Anderson and Traci Nelson of NRHEG, Hali Hendrickson and Liz Thompson of ALHS and Vanessa Politz of ACF.

Returning letter winners for the Lake Mills High School boys’ golf team were Cole Christianson, Charlie Rognes, Mick Tiedman, AJ Appel and Alex Brant.
