Weekend Planner: Annual lakes, downtown cleanups slated

It’s a weekend for cleaning in Albert Lea as two major cleanup events are slated to take place.

The Lakes Foundation of Albert Lea has scheduled the annual lakes cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, starting at Frank Hall Park.

People are asked to meet at the park and receive gloves, trash bags, shirts for the children and assigned areas to clean up the lakes.

The cleanup will focus on picking up trash in Frank Hall Park and the Golden Point Launch area, both sides of the channel between Albert Lea and Fountain lakes, South Shore Drive landing near St. Nicholas Park, the Brookside Boathouse and launch area and City Beach.

Downtown Albert Lea cleanup will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Freeborn National Bank building for further instructions. Garbage bags will be provided, and volunteers are asked to bring brooms and gloves.

The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:

 

Friday

• The “Re-birth of My Soul” exhibit by artist May Ya-Ya will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• Zion Lutheran Church will host a salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $7 donation is recommended.

• The “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral” exhibit will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “The Kitchen Witches” at 7:30 p.m. at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

 

Saturday

• The “Re-birth of My Soul” exhibit by artist May Ya-Ya will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

Northbridge Mall, along with Dylan Kaercher and friends, will host an Enchanted Tea Party with Alice in Wonderland, The Mad Hatter and other characters from “Frozen,” “Snow White” and “Cinderella” at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. across from Maurice’s. Cost is $10 per child.

Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite prince or princess. There will be a tea party and cake, a game of croquet, interactive story time with Snow White, along with face painting, a treat and other activities.

Tickets are available at Gypsy K Consignment in the mall.

• The “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral” exhibit will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway.

• Doors will open at 3 p.m. for the fourth annual Mardi Gras in May at United Methodist Church, 702 S. U.S. Highway 69. There is a $5 entrance fee; additional costs apply for food and other activities.

Silent auctions will close at 4 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., with a live auction to follow. Some of the items to be auctioned include a grill, camping gear, items from church members and items from local businesses.

In addition to the auctions, there will be a wall of wine as well as a gently-used book sale.

All proceeds will benefit the Albert Lea United Methodist Church youth local, state and national missions. Organizers hope to raise $10,000.

• The Alden American Legion Post 404 will host a steak fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Menu includes a 10-ounce ribeye, baked potato, cole slaw and garlic toast. Cost is $13.

• The Knights of Columbus, 1002 S. Broadway in Albert Lea, will host a steak fry from 6 to 8 p.m. Meal includes a salad bar and dessert.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “The Kitchen Witches” at 7:30 p.m. at Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Cost is $15.

 

Sunday

• The Alano Society of Albert Lea will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon at 1005 N. Ulstad Ave. Menu includes pancakes, french toast, eggs, sausage, toast, orange juice and coffee. Cost is $6 for all you can eat.

• The Bolshoi Ballet will perform “Don Quixote” live in high definition at 5 p.m. to the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway.

Quixote leaves on a journey full of adventures with his loyal squire Sanco Panza in search of his perfect woman. On the way, he meets Kitri, the dazzling daughter of an innkeeper who he thinks might be his ideal love.

Cost is $20.
