Weekend Planner: Popular demolition derby this weekend

The Crossroads of Destruction Demolition Derby will take place Saturday at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

Gates open at 8 a.m., with the event starting at 1 p.m. Inspections will be done from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Five events are slated for this year with an expected $24,000 payout.

Last year’s Crossroads of Destruction demolition derby in Albert Lea was voted No. 7 in January in a list of Top 10 Demolition Derby Events in the World for 2015.

The event began in Albert Lea three years ago and is the largest-paying derby in Minnesota.

General admission for all ages is $10 with pit passes for all ages $25.

The following is a roundup of other events taking place this weekend:

 

Friday

• Ascension Lutheran Church, 1101 S. U.S. Highway 69, will host a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with proceeds to support mission efforts in Kentucky.

• The Naeve Hospital Auxiliary will host a Books are Fun Sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All money raised benefits Albert Lea programs at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea and Austin.

• The “Re-birth of My Soul” exhibit by artist May Ya-Ya will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 320 W. College St., will host a salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Menu includes sloppy joes, salads, bars and coffee. Cost is $7.

A quilt will be raffled at 1 p.m. Raffle tickets are one for $5 or three for $10. Full size and baby quilts will also be for sale.

• The “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral” exhibit at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m.

• A signing of “Jehovah-Rapha: The God Who Heals” by author Mary Nelson will be from 3 to 5 p.m. at Cup of Faith.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “The Kitchen Witches” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

 

Saturday

• The Freeborn County Bike-A-Thon will begin at 6 a.m. at the Sibley warming house.

• Ruby’s Pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon at 1540 South Shore Drive.

• The “Re-birth of My Soul” exhibit by artist May Ya-Ya will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 226 W. Clark St.

• The “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral” exhibit at the Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m.

• A benefit for Scott Fredrickson will begin at 3 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in the Skyline Plaza. Activities begin at 3 p.m. with burger baskets available from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be raffles, a silent auction, bake sale and live auction.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “The Kitchen Witches” at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

Sunday

• American Legion Post 56 will host a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, fruit cup, potatoes, scrambled eggs, juice and coffee. Cost is $7.50.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “The Kitchen Witches” at 2 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
