A.L. Eagles take down Waseca in baseball

50 years ago: 1966

• Eldon Picha and Ron Wangen each had four hits to lead the Jewel Tea team to a 12-5 victory over Almco in an Albert Lea Slowpitch softball game. In a second game, Diekema Construction defeated the Local 68 team 12-8. Noel Severson homered for Diekema. COPI defeated Wilson & Co. 9-5 in the third game of the night. Ron Jahnke hit a home run for COPI.

 

25 years ago: 1991

• In a second-round game in District 1 of the Minnesota American Legion baseball playoffs, Albert Lea defeated Alden 8-6. Winning pitcher was Bryon Carlson and Steve Brigger had four hits for the winners. Tom Keating took the loss for Alden.

• The Albert Lea Eagles 16-year-old traveling baseball team scored four runs in the bottom half of the last inning and defeated Waseca 11-10. Ryan Meyer was the winning pitcher and also had three hits.

• Chad Bohonek of Albert Lea High School ran for 24 yards and the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter of  the Minnesota All-Star High School football game for the outstate team in its17-12 win over the metro team.

• Kevin Tapani raised his pitching record to 8-7 for the Minnesota Twins in their 12-3 win over the New York Yankees. Kent Hrbek hit a grand slam in the second inning for the Twins. Mike Pagliarulo had four hits and Hrbek added three hits.

 

10 years ago: 2006

• In the first round of baseball playoffs the Albert Lea Colonels were defeated by Rochester 5-2. Levi Hendrickson and Matt Trygstad each had two hits for the Colonels.

• The Minnesota Twins completed a four-game of the Kansas City Royals with an 11-5 win. Jason Bartlett had five hits and Jason Tyner four hits for the Twins.

• Mike Nelson of Albert Lea scored a hole-in-one on the 155-yard 8th hole at Green Lea Golf Course.
