ALDEN — Alden-Conger will soon be performing two one-act plays. One is “Big Bad,” and the other is “Baby Talk.” Both plays are comedies and are performed by students in sixth- through 12th-grade.
Ada Theusch and Pam Koenen are directing the plays. There are 19 actors involved, 12 stage crew members and three volunteers helping with posters, programs and costumes.
The plays will premiere Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. All performances will be held on the A-C stage at the school.
“I think students who participate in school plays develop a sense of confidence, perseverance and accomplishment — all while having fun working with their friends,” Theusch said.
She said the students can be found helping each other memorize lines, find costumes and reviewing stage movements. Cast members are even hanging out with other students they wouldn’t normally hang out with.
“There is a camaraderie among the cast and crew that is unique to the drama department,” Theusch said. “Drama is a place where the individual’s success contributes to the success of the whole show.”
The directors chose two plays that will fit the diverse talents of all the students. “Big Bad” by Alec Strum is about the world’s most notorious criminal, the Big Bad Wolf, who has been slapped with a lawsuit. Those who have been wronged by him testify against him, and the audience gets to decide whether he’s guilty or innocent.
“Baby Talk” by Billy St. John is about a group of high school seniors with intriguing personalities who flash back to their day care days. Baby talk is not just gibberish to them, and the play will allow the audience to take a peek inside the dramatic and funny world of 1-year-olds.
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and can be purchased at the door.
