At first glance, the list of coming road construction projects might be enough to send a business owner into a panic.

Replacement of the railroad bridge on W. Main Street, and replacement of Main Street from Broadway Avenue to Interstate 35 are two examples of projects planned for the year 2001 that could have a negative affect on business traffic.

But don’t worry, says the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Indeed, on closer inspection, MnDOT’s plans should set business owners at ease.

By working closely with businesses to provide access during construction, MnDOT plans to make Albert Lea a success story for other cities to follow.

MnDOT is not accepting full responsibility for access – it expects businesses to come forward and tell the state agency what concerns exist.

From there, MnDOT says it will deal with each concern that arises.

Business owners should contact the Chamber, which will serve as liaison between them and MnDOT. Business owners should also attend pending public hearings, and express their concerns to MnDOT directly.

By planning ahead, it seems likely that business owners along affected routes can help the state to minimize loss of traffic during the construction periods.
