The Rebels are also back in the state tournament.

United South Central captured the Section 2A championship Thursday, remaining undefeated on the season with a 6-1 victory over St. Peter at St. James.

It was the Rebels’ first section title since they were moved a few years ago to Section 1A, the home of perennial power and top-ranked Rochester Lourdes.

Thursday’s meet was closer than a 6-1 margin would indicate, according to Rebels coach Dallas Hagen.

&uot;It was closer than the score indicates,&uot; said Hagen. &uot;There was plenty of drama.&uot;

That’s because four of the sets went three matches, with two of them decided in third-set tiebreakers. There was another tiebreaker as well.

The Rebels swept the singles, though the first two matches were tight.

Lindsay Hagen took a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7 tiebreaker) decision at No. 1 singles, while Katie Johnson won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2.

The Rebels won in straight sets at No. 3 and 4 singles, with Jacie Haroldson winning 6-0, 6-0 and Gretchen Hansen prevailing 6-2, 6-2.

Kim Schultz and Heather Schroeder won 7-5 in the first set at No. 2 doubles but dropped the second 6-3, setting up some drama in the third set, where they won in a 7-3 tiebreaker.

Karen Yokiel and Shelly Bebler won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

Megan Wetzell and Kristen Hinkley played the other nail-biter, at No. 1 doubles, where they were edged 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).
