Roofing still dominates local permit numbers

Leaves may be falling, yet roofing and new construction projects continue to rise, according to the latest reports from the City of Albert Lea Inspection Department and the Freeborn County Planning and Zoning Office.

Leaves may be falling, yet roofing and new construction projects continue to rise, according to the latest reports from the City of Albert Lea Inspection Department and the Freeborn County Planning and Zoning Office.

During September, the city issued 172 building permits with a total valuation of $2,794,670. This raises the total valuation for the first nine months of 1999 to $43,473,313.

At the end of September 1998, the city report listed a total valuation for the building permits issued as $13,051,724.

Again, roofing became the main category with 134 permits being issued, or 78 percent of the total.

One permit listed with a $1 million valuation was issued to Flaherty Auto and Truck Center, 2527 N. Bridge Ave. This permit is for the construction of a new auto and truck center.

Three major roofing permits were also issued during September. One permit with a valuation of $253,000 is listed for the installation of a new Class A roof at the City Arena, 701 Lake Chapeau Drive. A second permit valued at $224,000 was issued for a roofing project at Streater Store Fixtures, 601 E. 14th St. The third permit is for a new Class A roof at the Albert Lea Airport, 302 Airport Road, with a listed valuation of $121,000.

A building permit with a valuation of $120,000 was issued to Bath and Body Works, 2584 N. Bridge Ave., to remodel space within the Northbridge Mall for a retail store.

Building permits for two new homes with a total valuation of $282,000 were issued during September.

So far in 1999, building permits have been issued for 25 new living units. At the end of September 1998, the city report lists permits being issued for 18 new living units.

The Freeborn County Planning and Zoning Office issued 28 building permits with a listed valuation of $520,255 during September. This brings the estimated total for the first nine months of 1999 to $6,150,585.

Three of the September permits were for new homes, and eight of the county permits were for home additions.
