It was similar to the teams’ earlier meeting at Rochester, in which the Tigers had several early scoring opportunities but went on to lose 11-0.

This time the Spartans managed only an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period, and Mayo’s goal at the 2:29 mark was the only score until the visitors made it 2-0 at 12:38.

The Spartans scored at 3:54 and 6:44 of the second period while outshooting the Tigers 12-3.

Mayo made it 5-0 just 33 seconds into the third stanza, adding goals at 3:37 and 5:35 to send the game into running time.

For the night, the Spartans outshot the Tigers 30-12. Each team had three penalties.

The loss dropped the Tigers’ record to 4-9-1 in the Big Nine and 4-12-1 overall. They travel to Rochester Tuesday to take on John Marshall in a 7:45 p.m. Big Nine game.
