GLENVILLE – The track and field program at Glenville-Emmons High School still has low numbers.
But they’re getting better.
The 2001 Wolverines have 30 boys and girls out for the sport, twice as many as last year.
&uot;Our program continues to grow and mature,&uot; said head coach Mike Kropp.
The girls’ team looks particularly promising this spring.
Last year, the girls’ squad included three freshmen, one eighth-grader and one seventh-grader who combined to break three school records in the 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley relays.
With all five of those individuals returning – Heidi Hansen, Amy Sola, Stephanie Peterson, Jannelle Hummel and Dara Cunningham – Kropp expects more records to fall.
The coach is looking for big things Hummel, a freshman who advanced to the section meet in the 200 and 400 meters last year. Hansen, a sophomore, figures to be strong in the 400 and 800 while junior Leslie Harlan is expected to do well in the shot put and discus.
For the boys, junior Maurice Chessmore – who moved to the school district from Nebraska – looks to be strong in the shot put and discus. Kropp also looks for a successful year from freshman Derek Lau, returning for his second varsity season in the throwing events.
&uot;Because of our low numbers, we will have a difficult time competing as a team,&uot; said Kropp. &uot;However, individually we look to have athletes reach the state track meet within the next three years – an accomplishment that has not been achieved in Glenville-Emmons track and field history for a long, long time.&uot;
