You can grab a little culture and support local arts education for $5 a pop this Friday by attending the Albert Lea High School band concert.

All three high school bands, jazz band and small ensembles will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Here’s a look at the other events planned in the Freeborn County area this weekend:

Friday, May 18

The Church Women United Scholarship Salad Luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, with Salem Lutheran co-hosting. Tickets are $4 and may be purchased at the door. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from District 241.

The first Church Women United Scholarship Salad Luncheon was hosted by the United Methodist Church Women in May 1983, and has continued as an annual event hosted by area churches.

The Albert Lea Community Theatre presents the children’s play &uot;Miss Nelson is Missing&uot; at 7:30 p.m. Based on the well-known children’s books, it is the story of a first-year teacher’s unique approach to bringing a rowdy class into line.

The show features several local youths. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $6 for students, and are available at the box office or by calling 377-4371.

The Albert Lea High School bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Saturday, May 19

The St. Paul Lutheran Church of Conger will hold a bake sale at 10:30 a.m. followed by a salad luncheon serving until 1 p.m. at the church. Tickets for adults are $4, children 6-10, $2. Children five and under eat free.

The Albert Lea Jaycees will hold their annual sandbox fill. Cost for delivery is $5 for the first wheelbarrow of sand and $3 for each additional wheelbarrow. To order, call Albert Lea Business Services at 377-1300.

The Southwest Middle School orchestra will have a car wash behind Hy-Vee from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

An event celebrating May beef month and supporting local 4-H groups will be held in the Hy-Vee parking lot from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can buy a hamburger, chips and pop for $1, try to guess the weight of a live steer, or register to win a $150 beef bundle.

Dancers from the Joyce Matthies Dance Centre will present their 35th annual recital at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Southwest Little Theater. The 2 p.m. performance is titled &uot;The Daily News,&uot; and the 7 p.m. performance is titled &uot;Rhapsody in Blue.&uot; Tickets will be available in the lobby of the Little Theater starting at 11 a.m.

Albert Lea Community Theatre presents the final performance of &uot;Miss Nelson is Missing at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 20

Ascension Lutheran Church will celebrate its third annual festival beginning with a 9 a.m. church service.

The theme is Building Bricks of Ascension. Member groups will be recognized for their volunteerism. The primary Sunday School, Alleluia, Cantate, Epiphany and Senior choirs will participate. Brass and string ensembles will provide prelude and offertory music and accompany the hymns.

Following the service, a spaghetti dinner with Chef Joe Lombardi will be served at 11 a.m. Tickets are available in the church office for a free-will donation.

The National Lutheran Choir will hold a concert beginning at 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church at 918 Garfield Ave. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased by calling 373-6946 or at the door.
