EMMONS – The Glenville-Emmons and American Legion baseball teams split a season-opening weekend doubleheader at Emmons.

The host team won the opener 5-3, dropping game two 15-4.

Dustin Peterson had the hot bat in game one, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three runs batted in. Matt Learn was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Brian Soper and Rich Mathis contributed one hit apiece.

Isaiah Lundberg, Ben Spurgeon, Mike Hullopeter, Tait Berg and Tyler Moe each had one hit for New Richland. Lundberg’s was a double.

Mitch Meier was the winning pitcher. Clark Field took the loss.

Both teams scored early in game two but New Richland kept it up, adding to a 6-3 first-inning lead with six runs in the second and ending it by the 10-run rule with two in the top of the fifth.

Berg led New Richland’s 15-hit attack with a home run and a single.

Meier was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Glenville-Emmons, which got one hit apiece from Mathis, Paul Kleven, Dylan Thompson, Matt Webb and Tony Walk.

Hullopeter was the winner. Mathis absorbed the loss.

&uot;We got some timely hits and good pitching in the opener,&uot; said Glenville-Emmons coach Louie Toulouse. &uot;We’ve got to play better defense than we did in game two. You won’t win many games when you commit eight errors.&uot;

Both teams are scheduled to play tonight, with Glenville-Emmons facing the Austin VFW at 6 p.m. at Emmons and New Richland meeting Blooming Prairie.
