It seems nary a summer weekend can pass without a major event drawing thousands to Albert Lea. This weekend, it’s the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

This event has blossomed from its beginnings downtown into a major draw on the north side of town. It provides a fun opportunity for local players, both casual and serious, to play in a competitive tournament. It also brings many teams in from around Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

It’s just another way the area gets added visibility.

The festivities, which include shooting contests and other events, begin Friday after months of work from organizers and volunteers. Their work should be recognized for its importance.

The event is also a great way to support local sports teams. Booster clubs help put on the event and in exchange get a portion of the proceeds. Attending the event can provide a look at some good athletic competition while helping young athletes put teams on the field.

Albert Lea’s mid-summer basketball tradition can be credited with doing much good in the community. Summer wouldn’t be the same without it.
