The Albert Lea Police Department also has lifted the administrative leave imposed on the officer who shot Caron.

Caron, 31, of 204 Railroad Avenue, was escorted to the jail Saturday morning. Two bullets hit Caron: one went through his chest and the other scratched his head. But neither of them damaged vital organs.

According to authorities, Caron stabbed Lestrud in her residence at 210 Front St. on Nov. 10. The following night ALPD investigators found Caron hiding in a wooded area near Railroad Avenue. Caron allegedly charged at an officer with a knife before he was shot.

Lestrud, 32, had multiple wounds that required more than 500 stitches, the criminal complaint said. She was released from the hospital on Thursday.

The County Attorney’s Office filed two counts of assault charges on Nov. 13 in connection with the stabbing. County Attorney Craig Nelson may consider an additional attempted murder charge after he examines Lestrud’s medical report.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has completed its investigation on the shooting. The decision to remove the administrative leave was in accordance with the BCA investigation conclusion, according to the ALPD. The BCA will hand in its final report to the County Attorney’s Office Tuesday morning, and the attorney will determine if any charge can be sought out of the incident.
