But it fell just short.

A 24-10 first-quarter lead by Glenville-Emmons was too much to overcome and the Wolverines held on to win 66-63 in an interstate high school boys’ basketball matchup at Lake Mills Monday night.

&uot;They outplayed us in the first quarter and we spent the entire game playing from behind,&uot; said Bulldogs coach Kyle Menke. &uot;It’s easy to see why they’ve got so many wins. They’ve got about four guys out there who can drain the three.&uot;

And the Wolverines hit them with regularity in the early going, sinking six threes in the first quarter.

Richie Mathis had four of the threes, finishing with 12 points. Paul Kleven scored 19, Chase Rayman 16, Nick Flatness 10.

Derek Richards led Lake Mills with 16 points. Brad Rogstad scored 12, Matt Hauan eight, Lucas Kreuscher and Joe Woelfel six apiece.

The Bulldogs pulled within a point at 64-63 with 15 seconds remaining, but Kleven answered with two free throws. A desperation three at the buzzer was off the mark.

The Bulldogs, who finished 6-8 in the North Iowa Conference, fell to 8-11 overall.

The Wolverines improved their record to 13-3.
