Alice S. Jirele, 91, Owatonna

Alice S. Jirele, age 91, of Owatonna, died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Cedarview Nursing Home in Owatonna.

She was born March 1, 1911, in Oakwood, N.D., the daughter of Elmer and Etta (McMartin) Heath. The family moved to Medford, Minn., in 1914 from North Dakota. Alice graduated with honors from Medford High School. She married Ed Jirele on May 23, 1932, in Owatonna, and following marriage the couple made their home in Owatonna. From 1951-54 she worked at Josten’s Yearbook in Owatonna. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church, Owatonna. She taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the King’s Daughters and had served on the Christian Education Board at church. She had served as PTA president at the old McKinley School, Owatonna. She was the first president for the Eagle’s Auxiliary in Owatonna. She enjoyed flower gardening and spending time with her family. Prior to being a resident at Cedarview Nursing home, she had been a resident at the Westside Board & Lodge, Owatonna, and Owatonna Health Care Center (Infinia).

Survivors include a son, Jim (and Faye) Jirele of Albert Lea; sister, Pearl Lueck of Rochester; daughter-in-law, Iris Jirele of Owatonna; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, on Nov. 11, 1986; a son, Jerry; a brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be held at Michaelson Funeral Home, Owatonna, on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. The Eagle’s Auxiliary Memorial Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna. The Rev. Scott Engelhart of First Baptist Church will be officiating. Burial will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.
