French program’s fate likely sealed tonight

The effects of last December’s budget cuts continue to prompt Albert Lea school board action.

At tonight’s board meeting, the fate of Albert Lea High School’s French program will likely be sealed, as the board plans to give Mindy Christian, the high school French teacher, an unrequested leave of absence.

The high school’s French language program was eliminated as a result of the budget shortfall created by the failure of an excess levy referendum last November.

In better news for vocal students at Southwest Middle School, the board may be able to restore some funding for a vocal music teacher that had also been cut. The proposed increase would be .1 full time equivalent.

In other business, the school board is scheduled to:

– Approve a contract with the district’s administrators. This is the final salary contract for the district’s employees.

– Hear a report on the status of plans to house a Student Health Center at the Albert Lea High School.

– Approve an LPN/Paraprofessional position at Halverson School.

– Review and approve academic standards for Southwest Middle School.

– Accept another donation to the district.

The Albert Lea School Board meets in the board meeting room at Brookside Education Center at 7 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month.
