AUSTIN &045; Mitch Meier pitched seven innings the night before, but the Glenville-Emmons left-hander asked for the baseball again Tuesday.

“He wanted to throw,” said coach Louie Toulouse. “I told him to take us as far as he could.”

He took the Wolverines all the way to the Section 1A tournament.

Meier pitched another complete game as the second-seeded Wolverines knocked off No. 1 seed Blooming Prairie 7-2 in the true second place sub-section game at Austin’s Marcusen Park.

The win improved G-E’s record to 18-7 and advanced the team to section for the second time in school history. They’ll play Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Hudson Field in Rochester. Their opponent was not determined Tuesday night.

The Wolverines had to win twice Tuesday, and they opened with a 3-2 decision over third-seeded Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander. Richie Mathis ptiched all seven innings. Isaiah Parry was 2-for-2 with a double. Paul Kleven, Nick Flatness, Jay Wadding and Meier also had hits.

“Richie pitched a strong game, and we made the plays when we had to,” said Toulouse.

The defense had an easier time against Blooming Prairie as Meier struck out 10 and walked one, running his record to 9-0.

“He was doing it on pure guts at the end,” said Toulouse.

Wadding was 2-for-2, Parry 2-for-4. Mathis, Flatness, Matt Learn and Jake Hansen also had hits. Flatness, Mike Yocom and Meier drove in runs with suicide squeeze bunts, which Toulouse said were key.

The Wolverines are one of four teams in the double-elimination Section 2A tournament.
