When it comes to boys’ golf, the Rochester Century Panthers haven’t had to endure many defeats in recent years.

The Albert Lea Tigers handed them one Monday.

The Tigers beat the defending Big Nine champions 309-318 in an 18-hole meet at Green Lea Golf Course.

&uot;It was kind of nice to dump Rochester Century for a change,&uot; said Albert Lea coach Doug Christopherson. &uot;They’ve been pretty dominant the last couple of years. They’ve been real strong.&uot;

It was the first conference loss of the season for the Panthers while the Tigers improved to 4-1 in the Big Nine. The conference title is determined by a combination of regular-season results and the Big Nine tournament.

&uot;It would be nice to go into that conference meet sitting on top,&uot; said Christopherson.

Dan Breuer topped the leader board Monday, shooting a 75 despite a rough start. Adam Elseth shot 77, Adam Boelter 78, Ryan Thompson 79. Missing the scoring cut were Ross Stadheim at 80 and Jon Breuer at 82.

The Albert Lea junior varsity won 336-353 to stay undefeated. Matt Bennett shot 81, Beau Larson 82.

&uot;I’m happy with our progress,&uot; said Christopherson. &uot;A 309 is a good score, especially in today’s windy conditions.&uot;

The Tigers travel to Winona Country Club today for a Big Nine triangular with Winona and Mankato East.
