BLOOMING PRAIRIE &045; The Glenville-Emmons High School baseball team had the best season in school history, and the American Legion squad picked up where the Wolverines left off.
Against a tough Blooming Prairie squad on the road, the G-E Legion won its season opener 11-9 in eight innings Tuesday night.
&uot;It was not a pretty win, but I guess a win is a win,&uot; said coach Louie Toulouse.
The turning point came in the top of the fifth inning, when a two-out fly ball by Jay Wadding was dropped near the fence, allowing three runs to score and tying it 7-7. Both teams scored twice in the sixth and G-E won it with two in the eighth.
Richie Mathis was the only G-E player with more than one hit, going 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Matt Learn had a two-run home run. Adding one hit each were Nick Flatness, Mitch Meier, Chase Rayman, Matt Webb, Mike Yocom and Jake Hansen.
&uot;We struggled after getting three runs in the first,&uot; said Toulouse. &uot;We went down 1-2-3 the next three innings. Then we caught a break in the fifth.&uot;
