John P. Stegenga, 64, Hollandale

John P. Stegenga, 64, of Hollandale, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Albert Lea Medical Center after a courageous battle with diabetes.

Friends may visit and share memories with family from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea. There will be no reviewal. In accordance with his wishes, interment services will be private.

John was born on Jan. 14, 1938, in Newry Township, the son of Joe and Dora Stegenga. He attended Hollandale Schools and Albert Lea High School. He served our country in the U.S. Navy. Following his return from the service he began working for Gordon Electric in Albert Lea. He later worked as an electrician for Wilson and Company and then started his own business, Stegenga Electric in Hollandale.

On Nov. 5, 1960, he married Karen Oldert in Hollandale.

He was a member of the Hollandale Reformed Church. He was an avid participant of fastpitch softball, and golf, and was a member of the Softball Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Elks, and the Eagles. In John’s mind the “only” football team was the Minnesota Vikings.

John is survived by his wife, Karen of Hollandale; his son, Jeff and his wife Pam and their children, Jake and Michael, of Dallas, Texas; three brothers: Al and his wife Bonnie of Hollandale, Ralph and his wife Marilyn of Albert Lea, and Herman and his wife Janet of Alaska; a sister, Tena and her husband Wendell DeBoer of Hollandale; father-in-law, Henry B. Oldert of Albert Lea; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Stegenga of Hollandale, Gail and her husband Bill Sievers of Albert Lea, and Faye and her husband Richard Madson of Glenville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Elmer Stegenga; mother-in-law, Edith Oldert; and a granddaughter, Bradi Stegenga.
