Henderson volunteers for museum, schools

Louis Henderson insists his extensive volunteer work is just something to fill the time since he retired. But the people he works with disagree.

&uot;He is wonderful. I don’t know what we would do without him,&uot; said Freeborn County Historical Society Museum Coordinator Bev Jackson.

Henderson started volunteering five years ago at the museum as a village tour guide. Since then his repertoire has expanded to some maintenance work, assisting when classes come to the museum, and planting flowers around the Historical Village grounds.

A little volunteering led to a little more volunteering, and now Henderson also brings fourth- and fifth-grade students to Thorne Crest South to visit the residents, helps kindergarten students transfer buses the first weeks of school and assists students in Mr. Haney’s humanities class with their annual teaching project at the museum.

Henderson’s motivation for it all is simple.

&uot;I like working with children,&uot; Henderson said. &uot;And working at the museum brings back a lot of memories from my youth.&uot;
