Porter Jr. to challenge Brooks for council

Keith Porter Jr., who ran for mayor of Albert Lea two years ago, will make another run for city government this year, challenging Sixth-Ward councilman Al &uot;Minnow&uot; Brooks.

Porter filed his candidacy with the city clerk’s office Thursday.

Porter, who has been president of the United Steelworkers of America local union, finished fourth in the primary election for mayor in September 2000, behind Mayor Bob Haukooos, Mark Anderson and Ray Brown.

Brooks, just finishing his first term on the city council, filed for reelection Wednesday.

Porter’s filing means all three open city council seats will have contested races this

year. Second Ward incumbent David McPherson is being challenged by Destination: Albert Lea President Randy Erdman and Fourth Ward councilor Ron Sorensen’s seat is being sought by bar owner Jeff Fjelstad.

Filing for federal, state, city and county offices continues until Tuesday, July 16.
