NEW RICHLAND &045; Four turnovers, eight penalties.

According to NRHEG football coach Adam Barner, it’s not a combination that often adds up to victory.

It didn’t Friday night for the Panthers, who had exactly that while being shut out 22-0 by Minnesota Valley Lutheran at New Richland.

“We’re a little snakebit at times,” said Barner, whose squad fell to 1-2. “We had chances to get back in it, but we turned the ball over and we had eight penalties tonight. Four turnovers, you just can’t win with that many. I’m real happy with the way the defense is playing, but we really need to start rolling on offense and, hopefully, we’ll turn it around next week.”

The Chargers and quarterback Carl Struck struck early Friday, taking a 13-0 first-quarter lead on a 47-yard touchdown run by Struck and a 21-yard scoring pass by Struck.

MVL added a safety in the third quarter and Struck scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth.

The Panthers were outgained 232-156 in total yards, 191-126 rushing.

Joey Balfe led the Panthers in rushing with 77 yards on 20 attempts. Quarterback Bjorn Peterson was 3-for-17 passing for 30 yards, with no interceptions. Three Panthers had one pass reception each &045; Michael Hullopeter, Jake Bushlack and Matt Wenzel.

Struck had 89 yards on 13 carries and completed three of seven passes for 40 yards.

The Panthers’ defensive leaders were Hullopeter with eight tackles and a fumble recovery, Justin Hove with seven tackles, and Matt Holland with five tackles and two sacks.

Next up for the Panthers is Madelia/Truman at Truman.
